Mid-Autumn Festival origin
The origin of China's "Yuandan" (New Year's Day) is profound. Historically, the term "Yuandan" referred to the first day of the lunar new year (now known as the Spring Festival), meaning "the first day of the beginning." After the Republic of China adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1912, January 1st was designated as "Yuandan," while the traditional lunar New Year was renamed "Chunjie" (Spring Festival). In 1949, the People's Republic of China established this day as the official public holiday for the Gregorian New Year. This evolution created the dual New Year structure we see today: celebrating "Yuandan" on January 1st and observing the "Spring Festival" on the first day of the lunar new year.
